set up, sound check, end
VEGAS Gallery is pleased to present :
set up, sound check, end
PAUS: Leiria 2/10/10
A video screening by the British artist Jemima Stehli who gained acclaim for her provocative work in which photography and documented performance dominate.
For the last three years, Jemima Stehli has been making work with a group of musicians based in Lisbon, Portugal. For her upcoming project at VEGAS gallery from 6 – 15 May, Stehli will be presenting ’set up, sound check, end’ which is the first of a series of video works made with the 4 piece band PAUS. The video is 93 minutes long and is made in just four real time takes. It records the preparation and take down of the Portuguese bandsv show in Leiria last year.
Filmed mostly in close up, the camera focuses on the actions of the musicians as artists and technicians as well as performers. The whole piece is shot hand held so we are aware of the single point of view as the camera moves to frame the image as well as the sound. The proximity of the camera to the group men at work, describes the intimacy and the familiarity between the musicians as the atmosphere intensifies before the show.
PAUS is Makoto Yagyu, Helio Morais, Joao “Shela”, Quim Albergaria
