RYAN MCCLELLAND creates monuments to the vulgarity of the of western consumer society, the flotsam and jetsam of our urban experiences are played out in narrative images and piled high in complex sculptures. Trash and treasures, decadent and base objects, are set up to create tensions within works he is truly a master of incongruous juxtaposition. He cleverly plays off state of the art technologies and modern uber consumer references within his sculptures, against the “naïve” faux folk DIY style of his work, As if to set up a mud-wrestling match, between the industrial and technological revolutions. He elevates the maligned and discarded, to the truly decadent level of Art. This shifting of value manifests itself throughout all his practice.Contemporary excesses are propped up and stuck together for the voyeur to feast their eyes upon these Frankenstein like creations, a sick visual taxidermy of contemporary life indeed, His unique brand of bastardized craft stands apart from the current state of sculpture, his art is slick craftwork injected with ironic wit, You are first seduced by magpie-esque, luster and glaze, and only on later inspection are you confronted by the detritus, that he has used create his practice.
